The human body is an incredible organism which is designed to survive and keep going.

Your body is designed to tense up for survival when it feels threatened or in danger, It does this to prepare you for running or fighting an attacker.

Are you living in Survival Mode?

At a deep ancient level in the brain, every day stress can be perceived as danger, so the body does what it does best and goes into survival mode, the stress response.


You tense up, ready to spring into action if needed.  You start to curl into a ball to protect the organs on the front of the body.


Your heart rate speeds up and your breathing becomes fast and shallow, and your system floods with adrenaline and cortisol.


The tension is usually held around the chest area or lower back and shoulders.


Your body switches offline any peripheral systems not needed for survival, such as digestion, circulation to hands and feet, reproductive system.


These systems stop working properly because your body is trying to conserve that energy because it's needed to fight or run away.

Stop normalising 'Everyday Stress"

Now, if you were in actual danger you might be able to fight or run away, therefore discharging that fight flight tension, and switching the rest of the body’s systems back online.


However, sometimes we are unable to discharge the tension because it’s too dangerous to run or fight, so we shut down completely, wanting to hide away; or it’s ‘just’ everyday stress, at work for example.


So it's not appropriate to run away or fight your boss or colleagues, and therefore the tension remains stuck in the body causing you pain and discomfort.


The human body was never designed to hold onto this stress response.


It’s supposed to be a temporary thing 


We are supposed to either run or fight or do something else to discharge the tension.


We were never supposed to stay in that shut down hide away state for a long time either.


Unfortunately, modern life doesn’t work like that, you’re always on the go, busy busy, never finding time to stop and rest.


You’re running on adrenaline and your body goes into the stress response and then has no way of discharging that tension, so you just hold onto it, causing all kinds of problems in the body.

Maybe you wake up in the morning and you ache, you sit for a while and your back hurts, walking helps a bit but during a busy day that’s not always possible. And too much walking hurts somewhere else.

Sometimes you wake up in the night in pain. You just can’t get comfortable, and it’s impossible to get back to sleep, mind racing, thoughts circling.


You spend your day hunched over a computer, and that body position sends "danger" signals to your brain, sending it into the stress response - it's a vicious cycle.
