Ashtanga Yoga and the Moon

 The Ashtanga Yoga Tradition observes a period of rest on Full and New Moon Days.

"During a full moon we tend to be more headstrong"

The moon's phases can create different energetic experiences within the human body that can be compared to the breath cycle.


Full Moon energy corresponds to the end of the inhalation when the force of prana is greatest. This is an expansive, upward moving force that makes us feel energetic and emotional, but not well grounded.


New moon energy corresponds to the end of exhalation when the force of Apana is greatest. Apana is a contracting, downward moving force that makes us feel calm and grounded, but dense and disinclined towards physical exertion.

They will be different from moon days in India and the US because of the time differences. 

Like the moon, we go through phases of being full and we go through phases of being hidden
