My journey begins

I began my yoga Journey in 1998 when I was living in Goa and I happened across a yoga class on my way to the beach. The teacher was Rolf Naujokat, certified Ashtanga teacher and the class was taught in the traditional self practice style.

The class was six days a week and after four months a habit was formed that has continued to this day. I was incredibly lucky to be able to spend 6 months at a time learning from one of the best Ashtanga teachers in the world. I used to work at home in the summer and live in Goa in the winter so it was perfect for my yoga practice.

What I teach

I have been teaching Ashtanga Yoga since 2012 and was Authorised by Manju Jois to teach Primary and Intermediate series in 2017.

This came as a wonderful surprise and I feel honoured that Manju recognised my value as a teacher of his life long practice.

I completed my teacher trainings with David Swenson in 2012, and John Scott in 2014. I have also completed two, week long CPD workshops with John Scott in 2015 and 2016.

I assisted John Scott at a weekend workshop in Oxford in 2017 and have assisted Manju on a couple of occasions when he has come to Manchester for week long workshops.

I have also assisted Greg Nardi and Scott Johnson on weekend workshops in Manchester.

I try to get to John Scott’s practice weeks whenever I can and recently made it back to Goa to practice with Rolf again which was wonderful.

"My teachers have always been either certified or authorised by Patthabi Jois and I have been blessed to have practiced with some of the most dedicated Ashtanga teachers in the world, most of them with decades of practice behind them."

I love to teach Mysore style as it is the way I first learned Ashtanga. I believe that this is the best and most inclusive method to teach this practice. It really is an 'All levels' class, suitable for both beginners and seasoned practitioners alike. When practiced daily over time, this is where you begin to see the real transformation that this method brings.

It really does change your life!

I am registered by the Independent Yoga Network as a 500 hour teacher due to the amount of hours that I have spent studying with my teachers.

In 2016, I completed the Rainbow Kids Yoga teacher training and in 2020, I completed the Yoga in Healthcare Alliance training which is an amazing and beautiful practice designed to be taught on prescription for the NHS.

I regularly practice two hours of Vipassana Meditation daily, revisiting my practice of the past 29 years. It complements the Asana practice and sustains my life.

Some of the many benefits of yoga are increased strength and flexibility, a stronger immune system, and a general feeling of happiness and wellbeing. As if you can take on the world, no matter what life throws at you.

These are just some of the benefits I have experienced since I began my daily yoga practice in 1998. I felt so passionately about the changes that I saw in myself that I have been helping people to look inwards and understand themselves through the practice of Ashtanga yoga since 2012.

I’d love to share this practice with you because you also deserve to feel these same benefits. You deserve to feel the peace and joy that yoga brings.

You deserve that bit of quality time in your day to dedicate to yourself, to recharge your battery.

A safe space for you to practice

We want you to feel at home. We want you to feel comfortable to practice your yoga knowing that you are being cared for and looked after.

Your body is your personal space

We believe that your body is your personal space and therefore we work with consent cards so that you get to say if you want hands on adjustments. I always put the cards down on the ‘No thanks’ side so that you have the choice of when and if you want to be adjusted.

This takes all the worry out of telling the teacher that you don’t want to be adjusted, and you don’t have to explain why. If it’s on “No Thanks” you will not be touched. However I will talk you through what to do if your alignment isn’t correct.

"Yoga is a process, but also the end goal"

You can go through the process of doing the postures or the sitting practices and that can be the yoga, but by this process we can reach the end goal which is also yoga.

Ashtanga means Eight Limbs

Ashtau means eight, anga means limbs. Asana, the postures make up only the third limb. According to Patanjali, the eight limbs are:

Yamas

Ahimsa, Satya, Asteya, Brahmacharya, Aparigraha

Niyamas

Saucha, Santosha, Tapas, Swadhyaya, Ishvara Pranidhara

Asana

The postures

Pranayama

Breath control

Pratyahara

Looking inward

Dharana

Concentration

Dhyana

Meditation

Samadhi

Contemplation, absorption, superconsciousness.

By being kind to your body and seeking not to harm yourself, you are practicing Ahimsa.

By being honest with yourself about your capabilities and not grasping for postures that you are not ready for, you incorporate Satya and Aparigraha, two more of the Yamas. The  first limb of yoga.

By showering before you practice and being content with where you are and just with the discipline of getting up and onto your mat, we have Saucha, Santosha and Tapas, three of the Niyamas. The second limb of yoga.

The movements we make with our body are Asana, the third limb.

The Ujayi breath we breathe is a Pranayama, the fourth limb.

By using Tristana which is breath, bandha and drishti, you look inwards at yourself.  Pratyahara, the fifth limb.

Tristana creates a focus and a deep concentration. Dharana, the sixth limb.

This leads us to a moving meditation. Dhyana, the seventh limb and eventually to the eighth limb of Samadhi, or superconsciousness / complete absorption in the object of meditation.

Each one of these limbs is a process which can lead us to attain Samadhi.

"I strongly believe that this is a practice for life"

When taught with care and compassion, Ashtanga Yoga is life changing and suitable for everyone.

By practicing all of the eight  limbs we take Ashtanga back to its roots. When taught with care and compassion, Ashtanga Yoga  is life changing and suitable for everyone.

I strongly believe that this is a practice for life, so most people have literally got decades of yoga in front of them. Therefore, there is plenty of time to collect postures.

So it is fine to take your time, practice gently and progress slowly. There is no rush. Just chip away at the postures little by little and one day they will come.

“When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break their bounds: Your mind transcends limitations, your consciousness expands in every direction and you find yourself in a new, great and wonderful world. Dormant forces, faculties and talents become alive, and you discover yourself to be a greater person by far than you ever dreamed yourself to be.”
